Staff Assistance

Library staff are available to assist you with reference enquiries during opening hours at all our libraries. We provide assistance in finding information for general reading, research, homework, internet navigation and help with searching our Digital Libraries. Online Reference help is available by using the Ask a Librarian form. A reply will be sent within 48 hours. More urgent requests should be made by phone 03 543 8478 during opening hours.

Reference Magazines

The Information Services subscribes to the following magazine titles: North & South, New Zealand Geographic, N Z Listener and Consumer Magazine. Copies of these magazines are always available from the Information Desk, (Richmond only) for reference.

Interloans
What is an Interloan?
If an item you want is not held by our libraries we can usually get it for you from another library in New Zealand. This is called Interloan (sometimes called an Inter-Library loan) and is a co-operative scheme whereby libraries throughout New Zealand lend items to each other.

Who may use this service?
Anyone who is a member of Tasman District Libraries.

How much does it cost?
It normally costs $5.00 but some libraries do charge us more. We can tell you at the time of the request how much it will be and whether it is available. Once an Interloan request has been placed, the charge is non-refundable unless the item can not be supplied.

How do I make a request?
First check our library catalogue to make sure the Tasman District Library does not already hold the item. If it is not held, fill in the Interloan Form. We will let you know if it is not available.

How long will my Interloan take?
Normally the item will arrive within one week of the request being made, however, this depends on whether the item you request is available on the shelves of the library we are requesting from or is on issue.

What items cannot be borrowed on Interloan
Most libraries will not lend material under 6 months old or popular fiction. If you think it is an item we should buy fill in a Suggestion for Purchase. Some Interloan items may be available for reading in the library only, e.g. some motor manuals, theses or rare materials.

Indexes and Abstracts

Indexes are a tool for finding magazine or newspaper articles about a particular topic (Abstracts are a brief summary of the item). As well as those often in the back of Magazines (e.g. Consumer Magazine) we have tools which index a large number of different publications. Some of the more commonly used are:
  • INNZ - an index to New Zealand magazine articles
  • Consumer Online

North & South, New Zealand Geographic and NZ Listener are also indexed on our catalogue.

Online Catalogue

Tasman District Libraries have a broad range of resources available to meet the needs of clients of all ages and interests. From the online catalogue you can search for an author, title or subject. You can also reserve an item by clicking on the Place Reservation button and following the instructions.

From the catalogue page you can access your account (i.e. you find out what books you have out, check when your books are due and renew them if required). To access your account you must have a PIN number, which you may obtain from the Information Desk at the District Library or any of our branch libraries.

Reference Collections

The libraries have an extensive set of reference collections. More information is available in the Collections section of this site.
