New Website to be created for Top of the South Island Local History
Government funding has been received for a new website which will digitalise the Top of the South Social and Cultural history. The project team which consisted of representatives from Tasman District Libraries, Nelson City Libraries, Nelson Provincial Museum, Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and the Nelson Historical Society have been working on the project for the last two years. The funding came from the Government’s Digital Strategy Community Partnership Fund and fitted their criteria well, as it will preserve and celebrate regional history using modern technology.

The project team will continue to work with the many groups in our communities who are involved in local history. As well as stories, the website will contain images and links to more information on other websites and links to our local libraries. The site will be designed to have a broad base of users including genealogists, schools, researchers and tourists. The idea for this website came from a meeting of local librarians who saw a need to have a site where people (including those in other parts of New Zealand or overseas) could find local historical information.

The funding of $100,000 will allow the development of this website which the project team hope to have up and running by July next year.
