Dear Mike

Hi my name’s Catherine Bryant and thanks to the Council and Grants from Rates Subcommittee I had the opportunity to experience the Spirit of New Zealand. At first I was a little nervous to go on the trip as it was out of my comfort zone. But when I got there and the boat started going, I really started to enjoy myself. I met some really fun and interesting people and participated in all the awesome activities that were provided.

The Spirit of New Zealand was a really good opportunity and a real learning curve for me. Plus I learnt skills that will be helpful in later life. I would really like to thank the Council for funding and supporting my trip and I am really appreciative of this. I really enjoyed this trip and it is a one in a lifetime experience.

Yours truly

Catherine Bryant

Dear Tasman District Council

I would like to thank you so much for the sponsorship that helped me to go aboard the Spirit of New Zealand. It was the most amazing 10 days! I got to meet great people from all over New Zealand and saw the most beautiful sites around the Marlborough Sounds.

It was a busy 10 days. The first few days were spent in rain which even stopped us from having our early 6.30 am morning swims (which I wasn’t complaining about). We did a lot of different activities over the 10 days including paddling in rafts to beaches and looking around. We also cleaned up a beach for the Sir Peter Blake Trust, we did a 3.5 hour tramp ending up at Anakiwa Bay where Outward Bound is, I climbed to the top of the mast and right out to the end of the yards. It was a fantastic view.

The atmosphere on the boat was always cheery and everyone got on like we had known each other for ages. We headed out from Port Nelson around 12.00 pm on 27 May after spending a few hours getting to know our way around the boat and sailed into Wellington Harbour early evening on 6 May (day nine). We slept the night tied to the wharf.

This trip really helped me with improving my leadership, team and communication skills. It’s an amazing experience that you cannot really appreciate until you have done it for yourself.

I am very appreciative of community organisations like yourselves and what you do to help young people in the district.

Many thanks

Nikki Gore
